God’s Love in Correction
God works in ways that we can’t explain except to say He has the wisdom of a parent. Take the book of Jonah for example this book’s focus is around the prophet of God Jonah. We all know this books main character is a man named Jonah who at the start of chapter 1 verse 1 was on the right path. Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Then by verse 3 something went wrong. If we examine the text (the written word of God) we notice the word (But). But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. This simple little tree letter word changed the course of this entire book. We know by having read this story that all things work out for Nineveh in the end, but Jonah was not happy as we read in chapter 4. Jonah 4.1. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
Does God punish, or is removing his protection over us punishment enough? Is God giving (punishment) or taking (protection) or both? He is GOD of course.
Repentance is a hot topic with Jesus. If we repent he will forgive our sins. This is a very general statement, but the main thing to keep in mind is God is our heavenly father and he corrects his children who are straying from His pre determined standards. This is the same method that a loving mother and father would use on their own children. The farther away from the family standard the more sever the correction. Lets us not confuse correction and discipline from punishment. Correction is when a child lacks discipline whereas punishment is when a child rejects correction.
Remember all people are children of Adam (the seed of man) and to become a child of God (the seed of the woman) one must and needs to be born again (or reborn) unto the seed of the woman which is the seed of God. A transfer needs to take place.
Genesis 3.12. And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Luke 1.27. To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. 32. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
As we re-examine the question we can see that correction is Gods method of bring about a change in the lives of his children to bring them back to a predetermined standards laid by God before the child was even born.
Jeremiah 1.4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 5. Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
There is no removing the protection of God over his children or his chosen people.
Jeremiah 31.35. Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: 36. If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37. Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.
Jonah 3. 1. And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 2. Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 3. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
How do you want to spend your three days? Walking or in a fish?
As for the punishment of God look at Obadiah 1.15. For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. 16. For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
Correction is the method God uses to bring his people to a state of restoration trough repentance.
Acts 19.1. And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2. He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Whenever a question is asked, it is conceived in a state of confusing then brought forth to maturity through the Holy Ghost in the form of an answer from God.
Moving on… read Genesis chapter 19 the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The conclusion of the matter is this, the Holy Spirit took the time to give us an example of change in the life of Saul soon to be renamed Paul. Acts chapter 9:1-31. When a conversion takes place from the seed of man to the seed of God you will find that the Holy Spirit was involved.
